NSSRA recognizes that some people with disabilities choose to participate in park district or recreation department programs with people without disabilities. To meet this need, NSSRA provides training, support staff, assistance and inclusion companions to partner park districts and local recreation departments so Inclusive Recreation can be enjoyed by all. NSSRA support can be in the form of extra staff, sign language interpreters, adapting rules and policies, behavior management support, disability awareness training, or other services necessary to include people with disabilities in community recreation.
This is a seasonal part-time position. Work hours vary from 5 - 30 hrs a week, depending on staff availability and participant registration.
Inclusion Companions are responsible for working with individuals with varied ages and disabilities in recreational programs throughout NSSRA’s partner agencies. Includes hands on support of participants, and recognition of the need for program adaptations. Assist community recreation leaders and day camp counselors in providing recreation programs for children with special needs, in a fun and safe environment. Companions encourage and foster independence and social interaction for children with and without disabilities. Attending to the personal care of the individual, each companion staff supports the goals of the camp program and works together with recreation staff to successfully include the participant. Companions may work 1:1, 1:2 or 1:3+, based on the needs of the participant.
