For College Students: Balancing Work and School

Trying to balance work and school can be difficult at times. There is a lot of responsibility on you as a college student and you want to make sure that you do the best job that you can in both. Here are a few things to consider about how to successfully balance work and school.

Schedule

One of the biggest problems that people have when trying to balance work and school is that they do not plan their time. They simply go with the flow and allow whatever is going to happen to happen. If you are going to be successful in this area, you are going to have to be proactive about planning out your time. You are not going to be able to plan out every minute of your day with complete accuracy. Many times, things are going to come up and you will have to change your plans. However, if you do not go into the day with some type of plan ahead of time, you are going to be pulled from one thing to the next. Try planning out your day the night before. This way, you will be able to start thinking about how you want to accomplish everything in advance.

Task Oriented

When you are trying to balance work and school, you need to be task oriented. This means that you should put an emphasis on the tasks that need to get done instead of how much time you are going to spend on each activity. Come up with a list of the most important things that you have to get done each day. Start on the most important thing first and work as long as you can on that task. When you finish it, move on to the next task. This will keep you from focusing on the smaller tasks that will not make as much of a difference for you.

Compartmentalize

When you are trying to successfully balance a job with school, you are going to have to be able to compartmentalize your life. You cannot be focusing on school while you are at work. At the same time, you cannot be thinking about your job whenever you are supposed to be studying. When you are on the clock, put everything that you have into your job. This is going to allow you to be successful in your job and in your studies.

Leisure

When you are trying to work a job and get your degree, many times you will put leisure activities on the back burner. While sometimes you we forced to do this, you need to save some time for relaxation once in a while. This does not mean that you can always have as much time as you would like to relax, but you do need to take the time to get away from work and school occasionally.
