Resolving Conflict at Work: 5 Tips
Everyone runs into conflict at work on occasion. Whenever you are working in close proximity to other individuals for many hours at a time, there is a chance that you are going to have some disagreements. Here are a few tips on how to resolve conflict at work.
1. Handle It Soon
Whenever you are faced with some type of conflict between you and another employee, you need to make sure that you handle it right away. Many people keep putting it off and keep stewing over the problem. Usually the other person in the conflict does the same thing. Then, when both of you put it off for an extended period of time, it usually ends up turning into a big fight. Try to handle any conflicts as soon as they come up. This will make the problems seem a lot smaller and you will not keep thinking of reasons to fight with the other person.
Whenever you are in the middle of a conflict with another individual, you should consider apologizing for your role in the problem. Even if you believe that you have not done anything that was wrong, whenever you apologize for offending someone else, they are most likely going to stop fighting with you. There is something about taking responsibility for a fight that quickly ends it.
3. Common Ground
Many times, conflicts at work result from two completely different people being around each other a lot. Whenever you are fighting with someone that you believe is completely different from you, you should try to find common ground between you. Find out what both of you enjoy outside of work. Typically, you will be able to find something that both of you like and it can lead to an improved working relationship. Even if you do not end up becoming best friends, you should be able to at least work in the same environment together comfortably.
4. Peace Offering
Whenever you have been quarreling with someone at work, it never hurts to offer them some type of peace offering. You might offer to buy them lunch one day or bring in something that you know they like. Any way that you can be nice to them and suggest that you bury the hatchet between yourselves can be helpful.
5. Avoid Public Confrontation
If you are ever in the middle of a conflict with another coworker and it starts to escalate, you should never have a big fight in front of your other coworkers. If you have a problem with someone, you need to ask them if you can speak to them in private. Go to a conference room, go outside, or go somewhere else that you will not be a distraction. Your employer may not like the idea of two of his employees fighting in front of the rest of the staff.
