Legal Hours and Jobs for Teens

OK, what Uncle Sam Says...

16 and 17 Years Old

Any day, any time of day, and for any number of hours. There are no restrictions on the work hours of youth age 16 or older.

14 and 15 Years Old

Outside school hours, you can legally work: After 7 a.m. and until 7 p.m.

Except from June 1 through Labor Day, when you can work until 9 p.m.

13 Years Old and Younger

Teens younger than 14 years old can baby-sit, deliver newspapers, or work as an actor or performer. But, if you are under 14 and want to get creative, try starting up your own mini-business. When you're working for yourself, you can do pretty much anything under the sun, so get creative.

Types of Jobs You May Work

14 and 15 Year Old teens are able to hold most jobs, for instance any job in the following locations:

Offices
Grocery Stores
Retail Stores
Restaurants
Movie Theaters
Amusement Parks
Baseball Parks
Gas Stations

You may not work in:

communications or public utilities jobs
construction or repair jobs
driving a motor vehicle or helping a driver
manufacturing and mining occupations
power-driven machinery or hoisting apparatus other than typical office machines
processing occupations
public messenger jobs
transporting of persons or property
workrooms where products are manufactured, mined or processed
warehousing and storage.
