How to Ask for a Raise at Your Part-Time Job

Learning how to ask for a raise is a skill that you can use regardless of the position that you are in. When you ask for a raise, there are a number of things that you will want to keep in mind. Here are the basics of how to ask for a raise at your part-time job.

Do Your Homework

Before you go into your boss's office and ask them for a raise, you need to make sure that you do your homework first. This means that you need to determine what would be a fair amount for them to increase your wage by. You do not want to ask for too much because they will automatically say no. You also do not want to ask for too little because you are going to cut yourself short. Start out by doing a little bit of research online to determine how much money people in your position typically make. Most of the time, you should be able to find some salary figures for any job that you are in. If you are comfortable talking to your coworkers about money, you might ask what other people make in the company. You need to go into your meeting with some type of knowledge as to how much money you should ask for.

In addition to understanding how much money other people make, you need to familiarize yourself with company policy. If the business that you work for has a company handbook, you need to read over it so you can see if they have any policies about raises. For example, some companies will want to sit down with you and give you an evaluation after one year of service. At that point, they might give you a standard raise. If your company has something like this, it may not be a good idea to ask for an additional raise.


Before you walk into your meeting, you should also think of a legitimate reason for why your employer should give you a raise. At this time, it would be helpful if you have some positive accomplishments that you can reflect back on. If you do, it will be much easier to convince your boss that they need to pay you more. Come up with a list of some things that you have accomplished for the business while you have been employed with them.

Private Meeting

Once you have done your homework and thought of a reason to get a raise, you need to set up a private meeting with your superior. You should not just casually mention how you need a raise while you are in the middle of work. Instead, ask if you can have a few moments with your boss whenever they have some time. This way, you will be able to go into their office, sit down, and go over your request with them.
