So You Want to be an Actor?

Many people dream of someday becoming an actor. As an actor, you will be a part of one of the most prestigious industries in the world. Here are a few things to consider about how to become an actor and what the job is like when you get there.

One of the most important parts of becoming a successful actor is to get a good education. Many people do not realize the amount of training that most actors go through in order to get steady work. During high school, you should take drama classes and get involved in the drama club as possible. After that, you might want to consider attending an acting school. Many successful actors have gone through an extensive acting school before they ever were successful. Acting is a skill just like anything else and that requires development on your part. Many actors look at education as a continual process that never ends. You should consider working with acting coaches, speaking experts, and anyone else that can provide you with valuable insight into the industry.

If you want to be a successful actor, one of the most important factors in your success is your location. If you want to work in regional theaters, you should be able to find work almost anywhere. However, if your goal is to become a television star or movie star, you will most likely have to move to New York or Los Angeles. Although it is not necessarily required to do this, it will increase your odds substantially. Los Angeles and New York are where the vast majority of acting jobs are. If you wanted to become a deep-sea fisherman, you would have to move to the coast. This is essentially the same situation with acting.

Many people fail to grasp the level of commitment that is required in order to become a professional actor. This is not something that you can do from 9 to 5 everyday and expect it to work. Getting into the business will take a great deal of commitment and persistence on your part. You will have to go to a number of different auditions and network as much as possible.

Working As an Actor

Once you break in to the industry, it is not extremely easy from there. For example, if you land a role in a movie, you will most likely have to work harder than ever at this point. In many cases, you will be on location at the movie filming location for months at a time. This will require you to be away from your loved ones for extended periods of time. You may have to work as much as 20 hours per day in order to meet the demand of the director. Therefore, while this type of work is prestigious, it is still a job. You will have to continually improve your acting ability and stay focused if you want to succeed in the industry over the long-term.
