Job fairs can be a great place to meet recruiters and find potential job openings. However, in order to get the most out of your experience with a job fair, you need to keep a few things in mind. Here are a few tips on how to get the most out of job fairs.

Focus on Your Resume

Before you ever attend a job fair, you need to make sure that your resume is in great condition. Go over your resume a few times to make sure that everything is in order. Look over it for typos and other fundamental errors. You should also have someone proofread it for you that regularly deals with resumes. Your resume is a representation of you and your work ethic. Therefore, if you want to land a job, you need to make sure that you spend plenty of time perfecting your resume before attending the job fair. 

Research Companies in Advance

When you are planning on attending a job fair, read the literature in advance and determine which companies will be there. Then take the initiative to learn something about the companies that you will be visiting. You do not have to memorize facts on every single company that is in the job fair. Just focus on learning about a few of the companies that you would really like to talk to. When you learn the basics about a company, the recruiter from that company will have a much better opinion of you. You should never ask a job recruiter to explain everything about their company. If you have specific questions about the company, these are typically fine. However, job recruiters do not want to spend their day explaining what their company does.

Speak Intelligently

When you start talking with job recruiters, you need to do your best to ask intelligent questions and provide intelligent answers. Many people go to job fairs and do not think about what they will say in advance. You need to practice some of the things that you want to ask job recruiters at the fair. Try to come up with a unique question that every other job fair participant will not ask. By coming up with intelligent questions to ask the recruiter, you will be able to stand out from the masses.

Give Honest Answers

Recruiters like to deal with people that give straightforward and honest answers. Many recruiters will ask you what your GPA is at school. If you try to skirt around the issue, most recruiters will not appreciate this. Even if your GPA is not great, just tell them anyway. They will appreciate your honesty and this gives them an idea of what they are working with.


Once the career fair has concluded, you need to follow-up with the recruiters that you enjoyed speaking with. The recruiter will usually give you a business card with a way to contact them. You might consider calling them or sending them a thank you card. Thank them for speaking with you and this will help to separate yourself from other job seekers.
